That hits the spot

Will anyone show up? This was probably my biggest concern when deciding to organise a sunrise movement, yoga & sea swim event on the coast. So I needed a design aesthetic that helped to capture & communicate the essence of what the experience would be about

That sense of physical satisfaction when you drink a pint of water when you're parched with the thirst

This sense was the inspiration behind calling this new community-building event 'That hits the spot', with the idea being that people get more in touch with their physical bodies, and find what works best for them. This event offers a space for people to explore new movements and help to unlock old patterns of movement. It happens out in nature, in a cove or on a beach surrounded by others who want to experience the same thing. Afterwards folks are encouraged to dive into the icy waters of the Irish Sea. The need was to create a visual aesthetic, with a look & feel that seeks to capture the essence of this elemental experience.

For this project I drew largely on natural elements and any on-site inspiration (where the event was being organised) that I could find. Natural elements played a big part, with waves and curves seeking to mimic the surrounding seascape and topographical backdrop. Bright, bold colours were also vital in capturing the beauty and essence of the place and its history.

A big challenge was in how to weave all of these disparate elements together in order to form a new identity for the experience and for this space that would do it justice. Seeking to convey the sense of the solid hard-edged structures that formed old tidal pools and changing rooms, alongside the curves and flow of the surrounding ladscape.

Inspired by local swimming & water polo clubs in Naylor's Cove dating back to the 1930's

The final designs took inspiration both from this local history, but also much more contemporary design with local street art graphics being incorporated side-by-side to create a bold & bright identity that has formed that foundation for the monthly community gathering- That hits the spot
